If you've read the news lately, you might wonder if getting a PSA test for prostate cancer screening is still a good idea, based on one 2009 study casting some doubt on its effectiveness. But it's important – and potentially lifesaving – not to leap to hasty judgements about still highly reliable screening methods, says Pacific Urology prostate cancer specialist Dr. Stephen Taylor.
Dr. Taylor and prostate cancer survivor Tom Kemp talk with KBAY radio host Sam Van Zandt about prostate testing and the newest in high-tech cancer treatments.
"I remember the days before we had the PSA blood test," Dr. Taylor says. "In those days, when we diagnosed someone with prostate cancer, 90 percent were already at incurable stages, or Stage IV disease. Now, with the advent of the PSA blood test, we detect 90 percent of men at potentially curable stages."
